Sự khác biệt lớn nhất giữa benzoyl peroxide và axit salicylic là đặc tính kháng khuẩn. Benzoyl peroxide có tính kháng khuẩn trong khi axit salicylic thì không. Nagler cho biết: “Benzoyl peroxide giúp tiêu diệt P. acnes – loại vi khuẩn quyết định sự phát triển của mụn. Vì vậy, đây là một loại thuốc bôi ngoài da có tác dụng làm giảm mụn trứng cá hiệu quả. Thuốc có tác dụng rất nhanh và có được kết quả trong vòng 5 ngày”.

Trong khi đó, axit salicylic là một chất giảm tác nhân gây mụn cho làn da. Kauvar nói: “Axit salicylic hoàn toàn không có tính kháng khuẩn.  Đây là một axit beta hydroxyl, có tác dụng hòa tan các tế bào da chết. Từ đó, hoạt chất này lấy đi da chết trong lỗ chân lông tắc nghẽn gây ra mụn. Đồng thời, axit salicylic cũng loại bỏ dầu trên bề mặt và làm sáng kết cấu da”.

Theo cả hai chuyên gia, benzoyl peroxide hoạt động hiệu quả đối với mụn viêm nhẹ. Nagler nói: “Nên sử dụng benzoyl peroxide khi đang dùng thuốc kháng sinh bôi hoặc uống cho mụn trứng cá. Kháng sinh có thể rất khô. Hoặc, một số người có thể bị dị ứng với BP trong kháng sinh. Vì vậy, hãy kết hợp benzoyl peroxide cùng thuốc đặc trị mụn viêm để đạt hiệu quả tốt nhất”.

Trong khi đó, axit salicylic hiệu quả hơn đối với mụn đầu đen và mụn đầu trắng.

“Chỉ riêng axit salicylic có tác dụng thông thoáng lỗ chân lông. Vì vậy, loại axit này hiệu quả với loại mụn không viêm như mụn đầu đen và mụn đầu trắng. Thế nhưng, axit salicylic không có tính diệt khuẩn. Vậy nên, dưỡng chất này có tác dụng hạn chế đối với mụn bọc và mụn mủ”

Kết hợp trị mụn bằng cả hai dưỡng chất

Nàng có thể kết hợp hai dưỡng chất trong việc điều trị mụn viêm nhẹ. “Cả hai dưỡng chất đều khá hút ẩm khi kết hợp, đặc biệt benzoyl peroxide. Vì vậy, bạn nên lựa chọn các dòng dưỡng ẩm dịu nhẹ, không gây mụn cho da” Kauvar cho biết. Tuy nhiên, bà cũng nhấn mạnh làn da nhạy cảm nên cẩn trọng khi áp dụng phương pháp này. Tốt nhất bạn nên sử dụng hai sản phẩm tách biệt. Như vậy, bạn có thể kiểm soát bất kỳ tình trạng kích ứng nào. Ngoài ra, hãy cẩn trọng với lượng axit salicylic. “Ở nồng độ cao, hoạt chất này sẽ làm chậm quá trình phục hồi da. Khi kết hợp cùng benzoyl, chúng có thể gây khó chịu, nóng rát, mẩn đỏ và kích ứng.”

Lưu ý khi sử dụng benzoyl peroxide và axit salicylic

Khi điều trị mụn bằng benzoyl peroxide hoặc axit salicylic, bạn nên tránh các dưỡng chất từ retinoid.

“Sản phẩm gốc retinoid thường chứa thành phần như retinol và tretinoin. Khi kết hợp cùng benzoyl peroxide, retinoid sẽ phản ứng như một chất tẩy rửa mạnh trên da. Đồng thời, hãy tránh sử dụng retinoids khi sử dụng axit salicylic. Điều này sẽ hạn chế nguy cơ kích ứng da nghiêm trọng”

Nagler cũng lưu ý không sử dụng axit salicylic nếu bạn bị dị ứng với aspirin hoặc thuốc giảm đau. Ngoài ra, không sử dụng hai dưỡng chất này trên vùng da bị vết thương hở hoặc bị chàm. Cuối cùng, với benzoyl peroxide, hãy luôn đảm bảo sử dụng kem chống nắng khi ra ngoài.
